Reign Dominates in Season Opener!

4/4/2011: Going into the 2011 season opener there were many questions on whether they could truly put the past behind them. With several months of practices completed and a fire and passion to prove the doubters wrong, Thee Toledo Reign was prepared to move past a disappointing 2010 season and show that they belonged in the discussion of most improved teams in the WFA. The Reign took the first step toward that goal with a convincing victory defeating the Dayton Diamonds 61-0 Saturday night.

The Reign set the tone from the opening kickoff, recovering an onside kick to start the game and scoring on the opening drive. Leading 21-0 at halftime the Reign kept up the intensity and captured their first victory of the season. Seven different players reached the end zone led by Jaime Spangler (2 Rushing TD’s) and Amanda Coressel (1 Receiving TD, 1 Punt Return TD). The Reign rushing attack led by Jaime Spangler and Kasey Clark controlled the time of possession battle as both rushers eclipsed the 100 yard mark. Defensively the Reign locked down the Diamonds offense, not allowing a first down through the entire game. Three Reign players recovered fumbles and LaToya Pettaway notched the first defensive touchdown of the 2011 season.

"Thee Toledo Reign players came together on every down and all sides of the ball to win as a team,” said Jacki Clark, starting quarterback for the Reign. “I am excited to continue through the season with my teammates and coaching staff; it's gonna be a great year.”

“I know that this team, coaches and staff pulled together and made this the best team last night,” Head Coach Mitchi Collette shared after the big win. “In MY eyes I see the best O-line, backfield, defense and special teams that ever graced a football field for Toledo.”

The Reign will bring their positive momentum home this weekend to face the Kentucky Karma (0-1) at Gallagher Stadium at Toledo Central Catholic High School this Saturday, April 9th at 7pm. Gates open at 6pm and tickets are $6.
