Reign Still Undefeated!

4/11/10: Coming into Week 2 many wondered if the opening week performance by Thee Toledo Reign was a fluke, catching lightning in a bottle one week against a team in transition and could not duplicate the effort. The Reign put those questions to rest Saturday as they opened the home portion of the 2011 season with a 23-0 victory over the Kentucky Karma.

Building on last week’s offensive outburst, the Reign had 386 yards of total offense anchored by a breakout game by Erica Lipstraw. Erica ran all around the Karma defense to the tune of 305 yards on 16 carries in a performance that is sure to garner attention for WFA Player of the Week. Quarterback Jacki Clark turned in a great all-around game finding the end zone twice, connecting on a 29-yard field goal and building her 1st-Team WFA All-American punting credentials with three punts averaging 36.7 yards.

“’Pull Together’ is our team motto, and thats exactly what happened” said Lipstraw. “I succeeded because of my entire offensive line. They pulled together and created the holes I was able to break out of. It’s a great feeling to score a TD and then jump into your offensive lineman's arms.”

“I'm honored to be a rookie on this new and improved Toledo Reign team.”

Just as potent as the Reign offense, the defense posted its second straight shutout. While facing a stiffer offensive threat the defense rose to the occasion and turned back the Karma on every opportunity. The Reign had an amazing 15 tackles for loss led by defensive end Brittney Rupert with 4. Kristi Lillie led the defense with 14 total tackles (3 tackles for loss) and four different Reign defenders recovered fumbles bringing the total to seven recovered fumbles for the season.

The Reign will travel to Vicksburg this Saturday to face their strongest test yet in the West Michigan Mayhem. Every year the Mayhem are serious contenders for the WFA championship and have handled the Reign the past couple seasons. But with an improved squad top to bottom the Reign look to be a true threat in the WFA N. Central division and will bring all the momentum they’ve built in the past two weeks with them!
