A new season, new league, new home field, new look, and the same goal – a league championship.
Thee Toledo Reign come into the 2009 season looking to build on last year’s 3-1 record in the final season of the WPFL, and they will do so as inaugural members of the Women’s Football Alliance. Not only will the Reign make the move to the WFA, they will also make the move from a fall season to a spring season which presents a new set of challenges and opportunities. Moving back across the state border, Reign home games will be in Toledo at Gallagher Stadium on the campus of Central Catholic High School. Despite all the changes, the Reign expects to prove to the WFA that the reputation of women's football in Toledo is well deserved. Several Reign players who have been there since the team's inception will exhibit the true spirit of Toledo football and a new wave of recruits are determined to show that they may be new to the team or the game, but they certainly belong on the field.
The Reign’s first opponents are new to them but well known to the world of women’s football as the West Michigan Mayhem make the trip from Vicksburg, Michigan to kick off the 2009 campaign on April 25th. The Mayhem are coming off a dominant 2008 season, going 8-0 in the NWFA Northern Conference and making it to the NWFA Championship game before falling to the H-Town Texas Cyclones. West Michigan has been a model of consistency during their three year membership in the NWFA, putting together a 21-3 record which saw them in the playoffs all three years. The Mayhem will undoubtedly look to continue last year’s dominance and spoil the Reign’s home opener.
The Mayhem will come face to face with a rededicated Reign squad with veteran leadership backed by promising rookie talent. Make sure to be at Gallagher Stadium on April 25th as the Reign shows the Mayhem and the rest of the WFA what they're made of!
