The beginning of the 2018 Women's Football Alliance season is upon us, your 2017 Women’s Football Alliance Division 3 Northeast Regional Champions are ready to start our journey toward a 5th playoff appearance in the last 7 years. With a core of returning veterans complemented by a solid rookie class, we are ready to hit the ground running this Saturday.
Five 2017 WFA All-Americans, including three First Team All-Americans (#43 Octavia “Tae” Griswold, #47 Marabeth “Mama Red” Lewis, #92 Maggie “Too Tall” Alberts), return for the Reign’s 16th season of operations. Marabeth will be joined by #11 Miika “Miikachu” Vining and #42 Lynn “Blue Shirt” Eubank as captains for the 2018 season. We are very excited to showcase this year’s version of Toledo Reign football, and we will kick off the season on the road against a new team playing their inaugural contest, the Grand Rapids Tidal Waves.
Grand Rapids has an extensive history in the world of women’s football, dating back to a National Women’s Football League championship for the Grand Rapids Carpenters in 1985. The Carpenters and the Toledo Furies were perennial powers in the NWFL through the mid-1980s. This season, Grand Rapids returns to the women’s football scene, rekindling the rivalry between Grand Rapids and Toledo that has lay dormant for over 30 years.
The season gets under way April 7th at Northview High School (4451 Hunsberger Ave NE, Grand Rapids, MI). Stadium gates will open at 4pm and kickoff is at 5pm.
