Pittsburgh Passion and Toledo Reign Rejoin WFA for 2016 Season

The Women’s Football Alliance (WFA) is proud to announce that two of the most historic franchises in women’s football, the Pittsburgh Passion and Thee Toledo Reign, have returned to the WFA for the 2016 season. Both the Passion and the Reign began play in 2003, making them two of the longest-running franchises in women’s football, and both will resume play in the WFA after a short absence.

The Pittsburgh Passion have a 96-27 record over 13 seasons of play, and their 96 victories rank eighth all-time in women’s football history. The Passion won a national championship back in 2007 and competed in the WFA for three seasons from 2011-2013. The Pittsburgh Passion spent the past two years in the IWFL, where they recorded 22 consecutive victories and won back-to-back IWFL championships. The Passion have one of the largest and most passionate fanbases in women’s football, and Pittsburgh has been selected as the host city for the upcoming 2016 WFA national championship.

Thee Toledo Reign were a founding member of the WFA, spending six of their 12 seasons in the league from 2009-2014. After a one-year absence, the Reign have returned to the WFA in 2016. The Reign have qualified for the playoffs in three of their last four seasons, including a 6-3 overall record in their last WFA season in 2014. Thee Toledo Reign are the top women’s football team in Toledo, a city with a rich history in the sport as the home to the premier women’s football team of the 20th century, the Toledo Troopers.

“We are very pleased to have these two outstanding teams back in the WFA,” said Lisa King, WFA Director of Operations. “Not only have they been pioneers for our sport, but they continue to be shining examples of quality organizations that display character and sportsmanship year after year.”
