Reign Dominant in Season Opener!

Thee Toledo Reign showed everyone in attendance at Gallagher Stadium Saturday night that they’re ready to take that next step in 2012 toward being a playoff contender as they shelled the Cincinnati Sizzle 68-14.  The Reign (1-0) scored three plays into the game showing off an explosive offense that is sure to be a threat all season long.  The Sizzle (0-1) matched the Reign on their first drive with a score of their own, but that’s the closest the Sizzle would be the rest of the game.  The defense tightened up and only allowed 7 more points the rest of the game when the Sizzle were given a very short field after a broken punt return.  The first quarter saw a lightning-quick 35 points out of the Reign and a halftime score of 54-14 put the game far out of reach.  The Reign posted two more scores in the second half to finish off an emphatic statement to start the season.

The Reign opened last season with a very potent offense and this season is no different with 495 yards of combined offense. In a departure from last season, however, most of these yards were gained through the air.  Kasey Clark led the assault going 12 of 17 for 257 yards and 3 touchdowns.  Amanda “Shaker” Coressel was the primary target of the passing game, hauling in 10 catches for 190 yards and a touchdown.  In addition to the aerial assault, the Reign hammered in 7 rushing touchdowns including 4 by Jacki Clark, who had 135 yards rushing on only 8 carries for a staggering 16.9 yards per carry.

Kasey Clark and Amanda Coressel carried their offensive momentum over to the defensive side of the ball where they established themselves as forces on the field.  Clark led the team with 8 tackles including 2 for loss.  Coressel chipped in 5 tackles (1 for loss) along with 3 pass defenses, 1 interception and 1 fumble recovery.  Both Clark and Coressel also forced 1 fumble each.

“The game went really well for it being our first game” said Coressel after Saturday's victory. “We obviously have some things we need to work on to perform at the best of our ability, and that comes with practice. I am very proud of my coaches and my teammates.”

The Reign welcomes the Detroit Dark Angels (1-0) to Gallagher Stadium this Saturday, April 21st.  This will no doubt be an early season challenge for both of these former division rivals, be sure you don’t miss it!
